The a/c algorithm in modern vehicles typically turns the clutch off on the compressor above a certain accelerator pedal position to provide maximum possible engine torque to the wheels. This is why cars with small engines accelerate the same with the a/c on or off and the driver doesn't typically notice since these bursts of full throttle acceleration are usually brief.
