Lower bracket repositioning on A&E awning

Whoever installed the awning on our Class C decided it was necessary to bolt the lower mounting brackets on top of a side moulding w/weather strip. I guess the idea was that the weatherstrip would somehow seal the bolts. Well, it didn't work and let water in to rot the wood. The bolts have pulled loose and now I need to address the problem. I'm thinking about moving them all the way to the bottom and (hopefully) catch some framing down there. Any thoughts, caveats, opinions or suggestions are appreciated. BTW: I've already considered the possibility of wiring and/or plumbing running along the bottom edge. I don't think there will be any plumbing and I would check closely with a tweeter for wiring before I did any drilling.

  • That side molding is installed to cover the screws or bolts used to fasten the wall to the edge of the floor frame. There should be an aluminum tubing runner there, so the awning bracket gets fastened to an aluminum tube rather than the foam core of the wall, or with long enough screws, fastened to the steel tubing of the floor frame.

I don't think you are going to find a stronger mounting point anywhere else on the wall. I suspect what has happened was the result of an awning handling accident, or a wind accident, with enough force to pull the awning bracket screws out of the aluminum framing member.

When manufacturers install awnings needing a different mounting system, they will usually put a mounting plate (metal or plywood) inside the laminated wall. In the absence of that, the floor-wall joint is usually the strongest place on the wall.
  • Awning installations are horrible as far as water intrusion, as you found. Especially where the lag bolts are. Check the top bolts too! BTDT.

I don't know about the allowable variation in the lower mounts. I bet you can find an installation manual online for Carefree or Dometic or whatever awning. They are all about the same construction.
  • Maybe some more pictures at a distance to see where awning anchor came loose, and where you want to relocate would help to see scope of project.
