I just realized that I never thanked everyone for your advice last year. We were very distracted because our truck camper lost its power steering and brakes right after we leveled out after coming down a steep decline in the Badlands. A few minutes earlier and we would have been at risk, and a few years earlier, that truck had done the same thing. (I kept saying that the truck was trying to kill us but hadn't gotten it quite right . . . yet.)
Thanks to everyone's input, and some additional research, we bought a Winnebago Access which is 27'11" (although it's a model 26) from a rental fleet of a dealer in Montana. It's a good vehicle, though it's longer than we'd prefer, and we're now looking maybe to trade it in for a 24'. The Coachmen Freelander has one that length with an excellent floor plan, and if we can find a used one at a good price, we might yet do that. It's been a big change going from a truck camper to a motorhome. We loved our Lance camper, and the ability to go off paved roads with our 4 wheel drive, and we miss it, but as we're getting older, we thought it would make sense to invest in a motorhome rather than another pickup truck.
