Here's my question: Has anyone successfully used a "dual-purpose, marine/RV starting/deep-cycle battery" as the vehicle starting battery? Costco does stock those in the type 27 size, and they're priced right.

Heres what I was told last year when I used one from my son that he bought for his pontoon. I asked a mechanic about using it for the camper or for my trolling motor? This is what he said. The dual purpose would work just like a regular deep cycle battery. The difference being is that the plain Deep cycle is that the lead plates in side the battery are thicker so that they will absorb more abuse such as road conditions, where as the dual purpose battery has thinner plate to allow for more cranking power for use such as on an inboard motor or electric start motor of some sort, but the plate can break off easier because they are thinner. The dual purpose will work fine if it is not tossed or bounced around too much while in transit. However, plain deep cycle will also work for either electric starter motors or for your RV but will not give you the cranking power you might need on say an inboard motor. There for the dual purpose has a place and the choice is yours but for the reasons given to me I bought the standard deep cycle.
