melted power cord

we were running 2 space heaters and have been during winter for last couple of years. the power cord wires to the plug were burnt and the plug itself melted. the only breaker that tripped was house breaker. Breaker on campground pedastel did not. We replaced the plug and cut wires back on cord.

When we plug in just 1 heater, power cord plug gets hot. what could be causing this? anyone have any ideas?

  • Wow, no wonder your using lots of energy.
Good luck getting out of there!

  • ok. thanks. the cg breaker has not tripped but 1 or 2x since we have had camper here. so that's good. we did cut back and stripped insulation on the cord. so bottom line it is most likely the receptacle. now if we can get them to change it.

cant pull out right now.....way too much snow...kinda hilly
and they haven't cleared anything here. this old 1990 HR MH won't make it.

Thank you for all your help!!!!!!
  • I would just cut the cord back to good fresh insulation and install a replacement plug. Both Camco and Marinco make nice plugs with handles built in for easy removal.

The breaker on the pedestal would not trip until you exceeded 30A. Your plug is no longer able to carry that much load with out getting hot. So the breaker is probably fine.
But breakers do get worn out though - usually evidenced by premature tripping.

EDIT: To clarify, I would replace both the plug and the receptacle.
  • thank you. we were freaking out. I do know the CG boxes receptacles and breakers have not been changed in years. We have been in this same spot for at least 4. I had helped out here last year and at memorial weekend, we replaced at least 15 breakers and a few receptacles.

hopefully last question. since part of the wires on the power cord were burnt, should we replace the power cord as well? And should the breaker on CG box have tripped?

and fyi...we are testing voltage on CG box and then a friend is going to test it with his meter. First test showed 150v, but hubby not sure if he is doing it right
  • The hot plug has nothing to do with the heater and water, it's just worn out.
The point where your getting heat is the problem (high resistance), not someplace down the line.
  • let me add to this. did have a water line to ice maker break. did have water on floor inside MH. inside house 30 amp breaker tripped.
we replaced it, the power cord plug, gfi in bathroom (which that did not trip either, nor breaker on CG box).

when we plug in just one heater at 750 watts, power cord gets hot. Granted, the heater was sitting in water but did not get wet and we plugged it back into the outlet that it was in when this happened. But now, if we plug in either heater, power cord gets hot.

we are trying a different outlet now to see what happens.
  • Agree with above. Poor contacts in the receptacle will do that. Ask park to change the receptacle if you are going to stay there.
  • A dirty or loose connection will cause this. Could be that the receptacle in the pedestal is worn and making a loose connection with your plug.
