Metal Roof sealant?

Hi I have a 1994 HR with a Metal Roof it was painted when new but all the paint is gone and I was thinking of cleaning it really good and putting some Dicor or something like that. has anyone done this and what did you use? And has anyone tried this stuff? Sta-Kool 805 Metal-X Metal Roof Coating from home depot?

  • i've had an RV with one piece alu roof
painting it white with a epdm compound IS cooler
white is more reflective than Alu color, plus it insulates the metal
so the Alu does not get as Hot and transfer that heat to ceiling
  • Crasster. It is a aluminum roof and it does have a Seal down the center and each end cap and so on. it was a painted roof but all the pain is gone. I have been fighting a leak for sometime now and had it checked for leaks only 2 spot were found very small and I sealed those. I RE-SEALED everything on the roof and still have a leak somewhere? so I thought since it needs painted I would just seal the roof with some kind of sealer instead of re-painting. as much as I hate to start putting something on the roof that I might have to redo or have it start pelling.
  • To SEAL a metal roof would mean there are holes in the metal. Most likely there is not a leak in the metal but either a seam or opening. For this you'd need to seal seams. You can use all types of things to seal them, but the one I like best is to brush on EDPM coating around seams. You can do the whole roof but if it is a reflective metal roof, I wouldn't.

If it is truly a metal roof there are several products that you might consider

Aluma-lock is an aspestous/asphault mix with aluminum in it (or was 50 years ago they may have removed the sspestous now) I do not recommend it personally but it has a high incidence of reflection and as I recall was sold for RV roof (But I've not sold it in what,,, 40 years)

Snow Roof, Quick-Cool and several other products are bursh on rubber roof coatings.. Now some are black (Do not recommend) and some are WHTIE,, Nice and bright WhITE.. Just like the roof on my RV they are WHITE... Friend used this type of product on her sticks and bricks and saw a major reduction in A/C cost.

(Of course all the FanDangles I did there helped that too.. Like 5 or 6 ceiling fans I dangled for her).... Got one more dangle to do but that's light, not fan).
  • Why would you coat metal roof panels?
If they are aluminium, remove the paint and keep them clean to reflect the sun.
For seems Dicor would be my first choice, abut having Camping World far away, I can buy similar roof sealer at Home Depot.
  • Thanks goop, below are some images, we love the coach.

The Barth is 32 ft long and 8' 6" wide.

    Cool rig. :C

I've never heard of Anvil. It looks interesting.
  • David, I have a 1990 Barth with metal roof. The coach had anvil coating on it since new. I have just recoated the roof with anvil white coating use 2 gallons on a 32 ft coach. It stays a lot cooler now than when it was coated with gray. It seals great.
