The easiest way to accomplish a state to state comparison involves travel. Here is how we did it. I retired, date inconsequential, and then my wife did. Sometime in July of 09 we locked up the S&B and took off. When we drove in to a location we thought might be a retirement choice we dropped the jacks. While we were looking a properties and getting a feel for the locals I would make an appointment with a tax preparer. Believe it or not most TPs did not charge me for their advice. Be up front about what you are trying to accomplish. Trust me when I tell you this, a realtor is not ever going to mention personal property tax. You will now be equipped with all your tax costs and a quick stop at a local DMV office will get you an exact cost on your registration and license fees. It is simple and accurate and gives you a reason to run some fuel through the "depreciating asset".
