If it was over rich it would seem to be black sooty smoke. If it's more white it would seem like coolant if it was water cooled. Burning oil may seem whiteish but is usually more blueish. Check for over filled oil then also look for oil in the breather /intake side of things. It could be rich so check that then perhaps move on to a quick compression test. A more through test will be a leak down test that will give you an idea of percentage of wear on the combustion system. A leak down test will tell more than a compression test.

If you ticked someone off they may have pumped your muffler full of grease and it will smoke for hours. :) Oh yes it will........
