Generally seles people do not know anything about towing capacity, they can read the label on the hitch, same as I can, Same as you can, but to actually subtract the GVW from the MCGVW is beyond their ability.
I would not say they are being dishonest. But ignorance is rampart in this country.. and the joke is "Why do salesmen wear name tags? (So they do not forget their name of course). Applies.
Oh and before anyone is offended by the joke.. I have, held both direct and retail sales jobs in the past.
