Motorhome Model Year Question

My wife & I are just starting out to purchase our first motorhome quite a bit of research has been done on line and now it's time to get out and "kick the tires".
We looked at a new 2016 model with a freight liner chassis. The only label we saw with a date was for the chassis which was built in Dec 2014. Dealer told us we had to look for the "body label" which would show the year of the motorhome. Motorhome also had 1500 miles on it and 77 hrs on the generator, dealer said this was from driving it from the factory to the dealership. Our questions how do you tell the model year of a motorhome and are they really driven from the factory to the dealer.

  • I agree it is the year that the box was built and put on the chassis is the date that should appear on the DMV title. Request to see the manufacture statement of origin or MSO.

In what state was the motor home manufactured. Could be CA or OR or AL which would influenced mileage. Surprised at generator hours which means it took them 3 days with the generator running all the time to get it to the dealer. Of course they could have put it a couple of RV shows.

The year of the chassis is often a year or so different than the "house" The chassis are built separately and shipped to manufacturers. They may sit for a while before one is plucked from the yard to build a house on. The actual year of the MH is what will be registered with the DMV. So you are looking at a 2016, it has a 2014 chassis and likely 2014 tires. That's how it goes. When you build a house the studs and materials may be several years old. Your house's age is when it was completed. As far as mileage, that seems excessive from IN to DE which is only about 600+/- mi. You didn't say the brand so hard to say exact mileage but that seems high. Also gen hours seems high too. I this a new unit?
  • We got a document from the dealer when we picked up our new RV back in 04. Pretty much stated what was on the odometer, about 900miles, when delivered new and was to be the starting point milage (as in zero) for any warrenties.
  • Usually that info is on a sticker posted on the wall beside the driver seat. Yes they do drive them from the factory to the dealer, but whoever drove it there must have had the gen set on the whole time.
