We hit the road and don't give a rip about fuel mileage. It's so much more relaxing that way.
Our Subaru gets good mileage, but it's uncomfortable to sleep in and the kitchen and bathroom are cramped.
While I tend to agree in principle, still knowing what to expect is prudent for a variety of reasons including trip planning. I like to plan fuel stops in advance (to a reasonable degree)and knowing the operating range is very useful. The cost is what the cost is but sometimes you can plan to avoid fueling in some states where fuel is outrages.
