Steve,
"$350 in parts and machining in 1967 dollars", those were the days. I just paid about $8k last year for a new V-10 installed in my 2000 Excursion (about $4500 for just the rebuilt FoMoCo engine). Another used truck would have cost that... but now I have a used truck with a new engine at least.
Here's a little nostalgia for you, a picture of a single cylinder old-time rebuilt pneumatic hoist similar to the twin-cylinder that dumped my car:

Don't see many of these type lifts around anymore. It came from a long web story about an old shop that has been totally restored, but surely maintained the flavor of yesteryear:

I still have a 460 shortblock sitting under one of my work benches. It was rated at 365 HP/500 ftlbs torque, by the old gross HP rating. It came out of a '69 Lincoln sedan (yep, suicide doors etc) and the 10.5:1 adjustable rocker heads went to a bracket racer buddy. Didn't have the heart to throw out the unwanted block. It ran fine and still had the original crosshatching from factory honing.
Take care.
