Our PI Surge protector, subsequently upgraded to their full EMS, has saved our rig many times. Not just marginal RV parks can be a problem. Once stayed a friends place out in the woods. Went to plug into his extension cord but checked it into the EMS first and found reverse polarity. He had rewired the plug backwards about a year earlier and had just not used the extension cord in that time.
At least a dozen times in the last couple of years, all across the country we've encountered incorrectly wired pedestals, open neutrals, bad/no ground etc. I will never, ever, plug in anywhere without first going through my EMS. The risks of too low/high voltage which can occur just about anywhere and knowing that it only takes once to cost you thousands of dollars in damage was enough to make me a believer. To those who choose to forego surge/EMS protection I wish you luck because sooner or later you will probably need it.
