Hi Guys,
My wife and I were talking the other day about our motorhome plans and she very much likes the idea of a 45’ diesel pusher. The room and roadability mean a lot to her but her concern is about safety?
Is a motorhome safe from the personal safety standpoint? I have read that RV parks are safe and secure and doesn’t seem to have too many crazy people. And I’ve also read that some of yoo have had problems at rest areas and truck stops.
What would you tell her about personal security.
• Is a motorhome safe and as difficult to break into as a stick home?
• Do people mess with you on and off the road because you’re driving a big motorhome?
• Do you have to be on your guard any more than if you were in a car?
What should I tell my best girl, I have my own thoughts but would sure like to hear yours so I can share them with her?

No - most you just need to knock out the door window and unlock it. Or a crowbar. At rest stops we've come across quite a few questionable people, lot lizards of both gender being one. Use your rig to go to the bathroom. No need to use the rest stop except to rest and let the dogs out.
Yes - it happens. Had it happen to us in our MH and all the trailers we've had. Many different ways including being malicious.
Yes - your driving a HUGE vehicle not capable of handling anything like a car. People like to test your patience and driving ability quite often. You can't expect to react as quick as you could in a car and need give yourself plenty of room. Not letting people intimidate you and watching closely to everything around you on the road can help you identify a problem before it happens. This means reading what some of the clowns around you are doing just by keeping a eye on them.
All that being said you aren't completely safe anywhere these days. If your wife is that concerned about it you might have trouble convincing her. We are always aware of our surroundings when we travel. Our constitution allows you under the second amendment to protect yourself and your family if you choose to do so. Maybe it's something that would help your wife relax if that works for you. Just make sure you read and understand reciprocity. Not trying to start that conversation here - just letting you understand some options available to you. It's up to you to keep you & yours safe.
