Why are you ruling out full-size SUVs like the Expedition or Tahoe? If you're focused on seating for 7 and off-road capabilities, then a full-size might suit your needs better.
The curb weight of a 4x4 Explorer Limited is 4900 lbs, and the Tahoe is only 700 lbs more at 5600 lbs, and the Expedition is only slightly higher at 5800 lbs.
And as far as MPG is concerned, the new full size SUVs have improved a lot. My Yukon with the new 6.2L / 8-speed is getting 22mpg on the highway, which is a huge improvement over the 9-12 mpg my old Suburban was getting. And if you go with the smaller V8, they're even better.
As far as the Jeep Commander is concerned - I love my Jeep, but would never recommend it to anyone who wasn't specifically looking for a Jeep. The Commander seems like a compromise that I wouldn't want to make.
Thanks Matt - but GM and I have a long History that will never be repaired, and the size of the unit is critical, as the DW will not drive the larger options, Expedition (if she's not Happy .....) so just not sure if the Commander is viable - needs to last a bit - but as you know nothing locks up and goes off road like a JEEP.
The mission is max of 7 so I can take the Granddaughters on some of the trails I/You love in Colorado/Utah. So do YOU think the Explorer's 7 passenger will go where you drive your Jeep?
That is the Question - well maybe not where YOU Drive! but where I might drive, I've had to back down a mile on some of these trails so I think I'm just trying to see if people have any faith in a Commander for Limited off road trips. Just one or two times that you need to lock up with one wheel off the ground to get by. Then will it be fine for the Majority of the time ON Road?
I think, I'm talking myself into the Jeep. I respect your off road "savy" so??????
Thanks,
Bill
