Need help with Firestone Ride Rite system

My LTV Free Spirit has the Firestone Ride Rite system, with a panel on the dash that has a gray digital screen and two white buttons to the right, one button above the other.

When I start the van, the digital screen stays gray, with nothing on it. Is there another way to turn on the Ride Rite system? I checked the fuses under the driver's seat, since I was told that's where the fuse would be located. All of the fuses looked good.

The manual says little about the system, other than that you shouldn't run it under 20 lbs pressure. That worries me -- I don't want to damage the system.

I was planning to take the van on its first trip tomorrow, and I don't want to go if I might risk damaging the system. So, if you can help, please respond quickly, so I don't have to scratch the first trip!

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Can you get under the van to trace the airlines to the valve stems? Just wondering if you have the control panel but no air bags, maybe the air bags were an option but not the control panel.
  • Thanks, Mumkin, that is very reassuring (Huge sigh of relief here).

You're right, nobody seems to know about these things. I called several LTV dealers, Firestone, and the factory. Unfortunately, I called the factory at the end of the day and the person I needed had already left. I'll try again at oh-dark-thirty tomorrow morning.

Thanks, Class B family, as usual, you've got my back. I appreciate it!
  • I have a different LTV unit, so things won't be in the same places as yours. The small screen with the up/down buttons normally lights up with a number. My fuse is under the dinette behind the driver's seat as is the pump that keeps the air pressure at the number you set with the up/down buttons.

Now... my system developed a leak immediately and the pump ran continuously if the engine was running. The factory had me pull the fuse to stop it. Then I couldn't find anyone to work on it in ND... the local RV shop said that they knew nothing... the Firestone store said that they knew nothing... and the truck stop suggested that I didn't want their dirty mechanics working on my shiny new RV. So, I drove it to Arizona. After a month, I found someone to try to trace the leak and then we had trouble finding the part. So, the next summer after driving back to ND and the factory in Canada, they fixed the pump.

Thus I drove mine without air for about 4000 miles and it didn't hurt them a bit... or at least two years later, they still hold air. I set it at 40 and have never figured out if and when I should change it.

So, the question is... do you really need them? You could call the factory and ask them about placement in your unit.
  • The inflation valves on my Sprinter are attached with L (el) brackets at either end of, and accessible just below and an inch or so behind the rear bumper. I have to tilt my head under the bumper to see them.
  • Nothing like that in that location.

We can't be the only two people with the Ride Rite system. Anybody with a Sprinter, can you join in?
  • Mine are actually drilled into the underside of the rear bumper on both sides of the license plate. If you run your hand along the underside of the bumper you will feel them if they're on yours. LTV might not have put them in but all of my Pleasure-way Excels had them.

  • Where? I looked under the bumper and didn't see anything. Can you be more specific?
    Thanks
  • We must be the only two that have these remotes. In any event, there should be air valves on the underside of your rear bumper that you can use to inflate them, at least they are on my Excel. It doesn't take much to get them up to 50# so be careful.
