New Flooring

We got tired of trying to keep the carpet clean in the Sahara, so after a bit of research, we settled on Allure vinyl planking. Just got done ripping up the old carpet and wood flooring (which was nailed AND glued down) yesterday. Found a couple of soft spots in the subfloor and walls from previous leaks that I'll be patching today.

Here's the end of the demo. Flooring's being delivered Friday. I'll post the end result.

  • We used vinyl planking and LOVE it in our units. Easy install, super durable, great price.
  • Looking good. Carpeting is terrible in rv's and there are probably thousands of people using Allure or some other brand. I installed peel and stick tile from hd that can be used tight together or with a grout line. Our fw is never in temperature extremes and it is still as good as when installed 2 years ago. If I had to replace it every 2 or 3 years I'd still use it compared to carpet. I also used a sealer/primer on my wood before installing. It gave it a sort of semigloss look and better adhesion to the wood. Ditching the carpet is one of the best mods we have done.

The edging is just old school aluminum step cap and a piece of painted 1/4 round now hides the slide rollers.

  • That's a big job for sure! Best of luck to ya! We stripped all the carpet from ours last year due to an undiscovered leak inside the rear closet that had completely soaked under the bed and along the wall....had to remove EVERYTHING to get all the wall-to-wall carpet out. Fortunately there was no structural damage. BUT, we replaced it with FLOR brand carpet squares and love it! The carpet squares are rated for industrial/commercial use and are floating, so if we spill something or one gets damaged, all we have to do is pull up that one square and replace it. Pound for pound, it's about the same weight as the vinyl flooring and it's much warmer and better feeling underneath bare feet.

Nice prep work, a huge job!

Don't leave us hanging...could you explain the "ripped it out" twice comment? Why? Was the flooring ruined by hot/cold as warned by Allure, or some other reason?

    Thanks.
  • A lot of folks on here have used that particular flooring with great results. As Jerry suggested, I would take some care during storage in the future, especially not letting it get too cold for extended periods - but that goes for any vinyl flooring.
Looking forward to seeing the end result.

  • I will be interested to see the finished product. We need to replace the floor in our trailer and are trying to decide what to use.
In another post there was a guy who remodels RVS and he has used Allure in a bunch of them with zero issues.
We may use sheet vinyl but a strip style sure would be easier to install.

  • I hope that works for you; however, you are installing the product where the manufacturer specifically states not to. Also, the weather conditions, if you store your RV, also violate the manufacturer's recommendations.

    1. "You cannot install Allure in ....camping trailers..."
    2. "Our adhesive can not get down to 15F (-10C) or not higher than 95F (35C) for an extended period of time. Long term exposure to freezing cold or hot tropical temperature will damage the floor or cause the adhesive to fail."
