yes, old gas is bad- ( we are looking at you, Iowa)- the ethanol which dilutes our gas causes deposits and introduces water into our fuel systems. ( that water can rust through a fuel tank)

it doesn't as much affect fuel injected vehicles, but anything with a carb can be a problem- small motors, old cars, motorcycles.

you could try running a chemical cleaner through the system and when stored stabil or other additive can help.

I have the onan and a petcock on the fuel line, this allows me to shot off teh gas supply and the genny will run almost all the gas out of the carb before stalling.

a local small engine shop may be able to suggest the best carb cleaner ...something they have had luck with on chainsaws, snow machines, landscaping or farm equipment

in general, in canada, shell 91 and esso 91 are ethanol free. that is all i will use in any small engine (plus adding stabil and/ or sea foam additive).

For my Honda, I put Stabil in the ethanol 5 gal gas can, and always run the carb dry. 8 years of using, and storing still starts on first, or second pull.
Seafoam is a good cleaner, but Stabil (imo) is a better gas additive/conditioner.

seafoam doesn;t all burn and can leave deposits.

I'm not sold on it after trying it in my pick up truck- which promptly failed emissions.

talking to seafoam they asked me to run a couple of tanks of gas through and re-test.

after which my co and HC levels were same as the years before.

I won;t buy it again.

If it went back to normal, I don't think you can blame the Seafoam. The same thing often happens when you use any fuel system cleaner or even if you switch to high detergent fuel like Top Tier rated gas after using the less detergent fuels. Anything that changes the orifice size or shape in the injectors will change the mixture, and it takes while for the computer to compensate, especially if the changes are ongoing like with cleaners. Once the cleaning is done, they almost always are back to normal.

The same thing happens often with a generator. Folks adjust the mixture to compensate as the jets gum up, and then when they run cleaner, they wind up tweaking the mixture back as things clean up.

I learned many years ago that if you put any gasoline powered engine (2 stroke or 4 stroke) away for a more than a week, ALWAYS run it till it shuts off. On my lawn tractor, I have a shutoff valve that I turn off the flow of fuel and run it to it dies. On my two Honda EU 2000s, I run them monthly with a small amount of fuel until they shut down, indicating all the fuel is used. I agree with previous comment on ethanol laced gas, it's PITA. In all my small (carbuerated) engines, and even my Mustang that I don't drive regularly, I only use 100% pur gasoline.

Im a big time believer in Stabil and always squirt a load of it in my 5 gal can before I refill it. Great stuff.!!
