New RV will be ours on the 14th! Need some help on planning

Hey all,

Thanks for the help on my previous posts. We have agreed on a price for a 2012 Tiffin Allegro 36LA complete with a toad (miata).

We jump on an airplane on Friday the 14th and will drive back to Reno starting on Saturday morning.

It is a little intimidating to plan the first trip, what roads to take and how to find quality RV parks for a couple of nights to stay. We took Monday off from work, so we can take our time on the drive- it is around 600 miles total.

Does anyone have some tips on how to plan the route for a couple of new RVers?

  • Good feedback from all! It is a new coach to us, but I do have a fair amount of experience driving trucks (not semi's, just class B commercial) and have been making the run from Reno to Sacramento regularly (in a car) for the last several years.

It should be a great experience!

I'd go north on I5 and take 99 to Sacramento. Then take 80 into Reno.

I suggest that route for a couple reasons.

In case you have problems you are closer to help along that route. Lot's of RV repair places on 99 and Sacramento.

99 is in pretty good shape now, just went that route two weeks ago.

It's all four lane road and you want four lane until you are more comfortable driving on small roads.

I don't know if you are familiar with mountain driving. You will be when you are done. You will hit two mountains...The G****vine and Donner Summit.

The most crucial thing is to go SLOW down the mountains. I just went over Donner twice last month and never exceeded 45 mph. Because it's four lane the people can go around you.

I used to pull a 91 Miata. You won't know it's behind you as they only weigh about 2,200 lbs.

When I read the initial post, this was my exact thought. Going 395 is the more direct route, but 99 is really easy for first time A drivers, and as stated above, if you have a problem it should be easy to get help.

  • We were thinking of taking another day to enjoy the new rig! I will check out both Boulder Creek and the Oasis.

Take I-15 to Hwy 395. Follow 395 all the way to Reno.

You will probably only need a one night stop between those two points and I would recommend Boulder Creek RV Park in Lone Pine. I think that's pretty close to about half way.

When we picked up our motorhome, we packed sheets pillowcases and towels, in our luggage. I would take 15 to Las Vegas, Stay in the Oasis resort, then take 95 to 80 then 80 to Reno. Vegas to Reno is about 8 hour drive.

  • Congrats! I know you are excited........

So excited they we only know you are driving it back to Reno and it's 600 miles

    BUT from WHERE? :B

One bit of advise......pay attention to driving. Investigate the doo-dads etc. when parked
