New Tires - New (upcoming) Mod

I just had all 6 of my tires replaced. It was expensive but necessary. I decided to keep two of the tires and intend on carrying one with me. This will be the mod. None of my bays will hold the tire so I am deciding on ways that I can carry it. One idea is to mount it between the frame near the rear. A more simple solution might be to store it under the bed but DW doesn't like that idea. I thought about the roof but that would require some sort of platform and more holes in the roof and is not desirable to me. Anyone else figure out a way to carry a spare?
  • Buy two tire covers so both sides of the tire are covered and put it under the bed. The tire covers will keep things clean as you move it in and out as needed.
  • ... just a thought... we traveled the country constantly for 8 years in our motorhome, including all summer to Alaska, and boondocking a lot via gravel roads and never needed a tire. Check them often and replace due to age, not looks. Yes, you 'may' have an incident but there's a better chance you won't. If you do, you have roadside insurance and just maybe you'll have to pay more for a tire but you're going through the expense of mounting it, carrying it around for years and if you do use it you'll probably want to replace it anyway due to age.

Since I’m the person endangering others with a tire on the roof not tied down, a little explanation. A 22.5 tire fits snugly around a MaxAir vent cover that is 8” high. You would have to get the front end of the MH 16” in the air before the tire could clear the vent because of negative gravity...one ruff riding MH. Yes the tire needs protecting and I like alum foil and then plastic wrap. You need to put something under the tire to keep water from pooling. The picture in the link above sits against a 4” lip at the back of the rig. It’s never bounced over the lip so the strap is not doing anything as it cannot stop the tire from raising up. Have you ever gone airborne while driving your MH as that is what it would take to raise a tire up enough to go anywhere. In the middle of the roof there is very little wind to try and slide the tire. It’s a used tire and it only comes down when no other choice and I guess you’ve never had a truck tire place laugh at you because of the size tire you need. It’s nice having the last laugh.

Your solution seems sound. When I first 'heard' of it I thought it was nuts but then I read and saw how you have it up there and looks good. My concern is I am not getting any younger and the tire, even off the rim, is kinda heavy so I'm not sure I would want to climb up in the event I need it. I'm also hesitant underneath as well. I think in the end I will probably go with the Roadmaster spare tire carrier and get the tire mounted onto a rim.
  • I wonder if a tire would fit between the frame rails in one of the compartments?
  • For whatever it's worth, our 2000 coach came with a spare and in 18 years, we've never had occasion to use it and hope we never do.

Hopefully you'll discover a method to carry a spare tire on/in your coach.

Best of luck and safe travels....:)
  • Years ago, I carried a tire(no rim)on the roof. I recall getting it up there was a real chore... that thing was heavy! Given the choice today, anywhere but the roof!
