New transmission

We are on a road trip in our 2002 Dodge Popular 190. The van doesn't want to go into 4th gear (OD). Brought it to a well reviewed place iin Coloroado Springs, CO, to have it diagnosed. Said it was a bad Transmission temp sensor. But when removing the pain to replace the sensor, the pan was shown to me having metal shavings. Shop says it is the bands from the 2nd gear. Says it needs to have the transmission replaced. Approx cost $2200. does this sound about right? We are many miles from home( (Louisiana)) and don't want to get stranded on the road, but also don't want to make an unwise decision.
