For PWM controllers wire size from the panels to the controller, so long as it is large enough to safely carry the amps produced, hardly matters at all. With MPPT controllers, wire size from panels to controller is important.
It is hard to find an MPPT controller that will handle 1000 watts. For example, the top of the line MPPT from Morningstar will do 60 amps or about 800 watts, when using a 12 volt battery bank.
