Newby to Class A MH needs help

We - my wife and I are new to the RV experience and know nothing but we plan on moving into our new home next month and I have so many questions, many of you RV's probably know, we purchased a used Tiffin Allegro bus 31 it's a 32' with a 454 chevy engine and a chevy frame, first off we know nothing about RV's, how to check the hot water heater or even if it works, how to fire up the frig. for use with elec. or gas, how the furnace works, if any one knows this things it would be very helpful-- in detail, I'm a disabled electrician/auto/diesel mechanic, so I know electric well, gas engines a little, diesel engines quiet a lot from the old days, and we need Help,

  • “I know the hot water heater will not heat water unless the water tank has water,“

Be absolutely sure the hot water heater has water before you turn it on...gas or electric.
  • The Lp tank is outside, the hatch/access door is marked
It must be turned on for the fridge to light
Very likely you have a 'tell tale' , propane control detector, it must be turned on before LP appliances will work, the little green light will blink when working, you will find it at floor level, it must be turned on, takes a minute to come on and open the lp safety shut off
You need the RV level to operate the fridge with out damaging it....When parked!
You need good batteries on the house side
Everything fridge controls, water heater ignition, furnace heat control etc.. work from 12vdc battery power, also the lights and the water pump
  • You got a lot of book work in your future. The systems aren't complex and aren't that hard to learn.
  • Thank You, as far as checking with the dealer for manuals, none came with the RV, as far as going to the web site for Tiffin, seeing how our unit is a 1996 I couldn't find any manuals for that year, I have watched several video's on how to do stuff, and the dealer wanted another $700 to show us around, we know the Generator works, but don't know where the circuit panel for the 110 is located on the coach, I have tried starting the frig, and a red light came on, in gas mode indicating the frig came on, but the frig never cooled down, I know the hot water heater will not heat water unless the water tank has water, and with the cold weather we haven't filled the tank yet but soon, I just wanted to say Hi to all and prepare everyone for the questions I'll be asking Thanks for responding to all.
  • Go to an RV park someone there will help you learn about your RV. Take a video camera or regular camera and notebook. Take pictures and notes of everything they tell you about your RV.
  • Tiffin offers the owners manuals online all the way back through 2007, so you should find some help there. Just go to their website.
Systems are broken down into chassis and house areas, and a lot of the issues arise from where the two lines get blurred.
The chassis is basically what you know from vehicle work, so use the house/coach part of the manuals and just go down the line, locating, testing, operating, and in some cases troubleshooting the systems.
As you find things that are confusing, try to get specific make and models, as well as listing the year of your coach to ask for help here as well as other places for items that are relevant to your systems.
There are plenty of folks out there who have had to go through the same learning curve you are embarking on, just give them the info they need, and many answers will come back quickly.
    Happy motorin
  • Deep breath....you’ll be fine. Some reading, some guidance from a friend who has or had an A. It’s not rocket science.
  • Welcome,

Read the First time buyers at the top of the page to start. That will get you started.
  • Check with the seller if the manuals are included with your new Tiffin. If not, take a walk through the vehicle and write down the model and serial number of the major appliances - hot water heater, refrigerator, generator, stove, microwave, converter, etc. Many of the manuals to these systems are available online and make for informative reading.
