Newport Oregon to Fort Collins Co

We are new to the RV life and need some help. We will be traveling from Newport Oregon to Fort Collins Colorado this month and noticed there are a few ways to go. Is it better to go up to Portland and go that way or down to Sacramento and go that way? I heard going through Mt.Hood can be crazy and going through Nevada is really windy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Christy

I'll tell you the route we'd take if we were going thru Oregon this month.
    Newport to Lincoln City
Lincoln City to Salem (hwy 20)
    Salem to Bend (Hwy 20)
Bend to Ontario and then catch 84

Uhhhh...actually, the road from Lincoln City to Salem is Hwy 18. Hwy 20 goes east out of Newport over to Corvallis. Hwy 20 out of Newport has been under construction for several years and I think it is still not completed. So that stretch has a lot of curves. However, I still think it's better to take 20 than to have to go north to Lincoln City and then over to Salem as going through Lincoln city is always busy with traffic not to mention having to go through Salem.

Once in Corvallis if you continue on 20, it goes through downtown Corvallis up to and through busy Albany and then over to Lebanon. Better to catch 34 out of Corvallis (before you go downtown) over to Lebanon and then back on 20. But then you have to go up and over Santiam Pass...ugh...not good!

We usually take 20/34 to I5 and then north to Salem and take 22 over to Sisters and back on 20 to Bend and across Oregon to I84 in Idaho. 84 south to I15 and then east on I80 across to Wyoming and down to Colorado on I25.

    works for us...

  • Speaking for the other end of the trip. Cross Idaho on I84, South toward Salt Lake on I80/I15 to Ogden and use I84 at Riverdale to go East on I84, much easier than going through Salt Lake and up I80. When you cross Wyoming turn South on US-287 on the South side of Laramie and travel directly into Ft. Collins. This cuts out the worst of the hills and windy roads. Hope this helps, I have traveled this route all months of the year and find it as passable or more passable than going to Cheyenne and using I25.
  • ... getting numbers wrong here....

I-80 doesn't go through Idaho... it comes from Sacramento through Nevada to SLC and on to Cheyenne WY. Did you mean I-84?

You really need to find something to do rather than check key strokes and spelling errors. If the original poster needs more help, PM me, I wouldn't want to make another error:(
  • You know I don't care about spelling errors or key strokes...but when it comes to giving out bad directions, the OP really needs to be given correct data. I'm really sorry if I offended you....was not my intention. I apologize.
