Anytime I see a pick-up truck or cargo trailer loaded with 'anything', I stay back or get away. Several years back I was going to Los Angeles quite often from Palm Springs (130 miles each way). The things that I saw come off of vehicles is astonishing. Traffic can be SO heavy that you can't make quick lane changes.
-a whole sofa slid out the back of a pick-up truck landing on the freeway at 70 mph. Thank goodness it slid off to the side before anyone hit it. The lady driving the truck was oblivious for a mile or two.
-an engine hood flew off of VW Rabbit landing in the freeway. I just happened to be in the correct lane to miss it.
-a car in an adjacent lane ran over a hub cap causing it to become airborne towards me. Luckily, no one was in the lane next to me and I was able to swerve. It would have scratched my brand new car at the time (I would not have been a happy camper!)
-ladders laying in the freeway, lawn chairs, tire carcasses, etc.
You name it!!! I have just about seen everything.
Driving through Texas once, a truck passes me towing a vehicle and I happened to glance over at the tow connections. This guy was pulling a mid-80's Ford Bronco with just the tow-bar arm attached to the front bumper (no safety chains). The tow bar was attached on a tow ball and driving WAY too fast!
Well, a few miles up the road traffic starts to slow, as we pass what we see as an accident scene, there is a mid-80's Ford Bronco facing us in the right side emergency lane. It apparently came loose (shock!) and rolled several times. What an idiot! Thank the lucky stars that nobody was involved or hurt.
Be careful out there!
