Been there with code 36 on the same genny. You'll gets lots of opinions but the code 36 is almost always fuel related.
I checked the fuel line and tightened all clamps. That improved things for a brief time.
I eventually bit the bullet and bought a new fuel pump and filter. Kind of had to when I messed up the original pump removing the filter.
The fuel pump was available on-line for around $50.00 It was attached to the frame rail just forward of the genny compartment. it is an in line pump, a round canister with fuel lines in one end and out the opposite. It looks like a fuel filter but it has electrical wires going into it. It is smaller than a coke can but larger than a D size battery, easy to find, just follow the fuel line back from the genny and you can't miss it.
When you find the filter, it has a part number on it. Put the number into a Google search and you will find many places to buy it. Don't be afraid to buy the after-market. The parts man at Onan says the after-market manufacturer makes the Onan brand as well, only difference is the name on the outside. Changing it is easy and the filter is screwed into the end of it.
The filter you need to eliminate is between the pump and the carb. Onan wants about $45.00 for the bypass kit. You can go to your local auto supply and buy the parts for under $10.00 and make your own kit, just need gas line and fittings.
My genny runs like new, a satisfying fix all under $70.00 with the new filter included.
