I think you nailed it. I got the rig home today. After a short nap I crawled underneath in search of the inline filter installed at the factory.
Sure enough, there it was, right near the junction of the rubber tubing to the metal line. From the looks of it I don't think it had ever been replaced.
2 dollars and sixty-nine cents later and I was in business. After priming the genset I ran it for 30 minutes and it showed no sign of shutting down.
I will run it long tomorrow but I feel confident that was the problem. The genset purrs like a kitten.
