Onan generator issue

Just as I am about to go on vacation, I'm noticing my generator is loping if I'm trying to run one of the AC's. This makes the AC lope as well. I don't remember it doing that. I've only run the generator in the past to run AC on the road, but last year I noticed it was cutting off after a while. The generator runs good with the AC off.

Any idea what might be causing this?

  • My suggestion would be to install a new and clean fuel filter. Not too bad a diy! Good luck!

I too just ran into the problem.. In my case the rear AC works fine off the GenSet which told me the problem is NOT the generator.. The Front AC however as soon as it tried to kick in the compressor would just bog down the GenSet almost to it shutting down.

From what I am reading this problem can also be caused by a capacitor the AC uses to start up and is a common problem.. I am still trying to find out WHICH capacitor to use to replace on mine but it may not be the GenSet you are having the issue with..

Changing the fuel filter solved my problem.

Is that a DYI feature? I have an Onan/Cummins parts place in my area.

Yes, it's not a difficult process to change the fuel filter.
  • Mine wasn't surging, but would run for a little while and then stop. Changed fuel filter, eliminated fuel filter right before the carb, changed fuel lines, spark plugs and air cleaner. Runs like a champ now.
