Onan oil safety

I have a 6.5 kw emerald gen 3 generator that stops as soon as you release the start button. I understand there is a oil shut off that will act like this. My question is does the generator use a oil pressure switch to do this. If so where is it located?

Thanks
  • There are several protection cut offs. Can you decipher any error codes? Count the flashing lights if you get any.
  • It will stop if it doesn't make power.
Ours had bad stater coil and regulator. Due to underuse caused corrosion.
    Oman dealer fixed it.

  • Has this generator been sitting a while? Or run at all? It could be that the brushes and slip rings are corroded and just need to be cleaned up. That would prevent voltage from being produced.

Next, the voltage regular is also a possible culprit. I had a 1990 with an Emerald III and that was my issue. What happens is that the voltage regulator prevents power from being generated so the unit cuts off.

I'd be skeptical of it being the low oil shut off. But, it is possible.
  • google onan troubleshooting and pick flight system or

  • I know little about the rig I just bought and a lot that sell donated vehicles. The sales man told me he had it running for a day or two, but then it shut down and would not start again. I have ran it for about 30 seconds while holding down the start button. But stops as soon as you released. There is over a half tank of fuel in the tank. New fuel. I would have to say it may have been setting for years. It hasn't be registered sense 2006. The sales man informed me he was able to rum the AC on the rig for several hours.

    Thanks for the help

  • I had an 87 in a Pace arrow did the same thing. A brush kicked back and wedged in the holder, so it wasn't making enough power, so it cut off as soon as you release the start button. re0placed brushes and all was well. remember one thing if you do it yourself, That armature area is magenetized and anything you drop in there will go in that area(screws etc.) and you may have a bad situation trying to retrieve them. Good luck cost me about 150.00 to have replaced in Delaware area.
  • I'd go fill the gas tank first. The stand pipe might be higher than normal. Check air filter. If dirty they are set up not to run.

no it will not run if that switch is bad as it shuts off the fuel supply to the carb.If it runs as long as u hold the start button down it sounds like the control board
