I was (in a car) on I-40 near the TX/NM border and saw a Class C where that had happened. Windy day in mountains besides. Couple standing by the coach looking at billows of awning fabric.
The above is correct. It's not a bad idea to immobilize Rafters to Arms, but the Latch releasing is the typical problem.
I use the Awning Rod method O-B mentioned above. Another plus is you know where the rod is.
***OP*** if the hardware was pulled loose, either the upper Track or the two Arm Brackets, make sure the reattachment repair is Well Sealed, or water will get into the laminated walls and/or floor joint.
