You are correct, you loose a lot of the standard type awning when they are over a slide.
You might be over thinking the impact the awning would have on the slide. We've had a 16' awning on the slide our 5th wheel serving as a second awning, and a 20' slide on the full wall slide we have now. It makes it nice, to have full tilt and full width and depth of the awning when attached to the slide.
A step up puts you into a roof mount Gerrard or Carefree that extends beyond the slide, then tilts down.
