In the beginning of RVs in the US there were many chassis mounted campers like shown. 10,12,16,18 on up to 25 foot models were made by many of the 1950 through 70's RV manufacturers. As with most other things in the US, the buying public wanted bigger light trucks did not have tha capabilty to handle the weight so commercial truck chassis or special built motorhome chassis were used. Sizes grew up to 45 feet with 35 to 40 being the most prevalent.
Now that the economy is suffering, gas prices are up and the new environmental concerns...smaller RVs are in fashion again. You will see some based on light trucks but most are based on vans especially the new generation Ford, Dodge and Mercedes.
They are built on the smaller 3 Litre diesels,so they can go down fairly narrow tracks,, get across dunes etc
