When you buy a unit that is 26 years old or 6 years old, you never know what you will get. Anything can happen. Just because something is good today on it, doesn't mean it will be tomorrow. And appearances can be deceiving. People do a good job and hiding things. The more time you spend with and in a unit, the more you see the defects in it.
If you are a handy person that can fix anything, have the time and have the money to fix things as they come up, then by all means save the money if it makes you happy. While I can do some simple mechanical things, I do not have the desire to do more than that. Nor do I have the time. My off time is spent camping, shooting photography, kayaking, etc. Repair work is not in there as a hobby. With the little time I get to be able to go camping, I don't want to be spending it fixing something. I bought the RV to use it. For me, the better choice is having a newer unit. Yes I purchase the extended warranties. I may waste my money there, but I save it where others may waste their money.
Some people can only afford to buy older units. And I think that's great. I would rather see them out in an older unit, than sitting back and saying "when I retire....". No matter what you can afford, just get out there and enjoy the lifestyle. But if you buy something that you are forever putting a band aid on, then you might not enjoy it so much.
