Very interesting read.
BTW, 2000 hours on a diesel generator is not a lot. Generators like exercise so the thing to be wary of on a "vintage" coach is low hours.
I went through an extensive period of research before buying a "vintage" unit almost 4 years ago.
I finally zeroed in on 1 manufacturer and then proceeded to look at only American Eagles and Dreams because I just loved the look and the quality of the cabinetry and appliances. Once I was educated on the difference between Dreams and Eagles, I only looked at Eagles.
You may serve yourself well by establishing some parameters. Here is what I would suggest:
-Fiberglass roof
-Side Radiator
-Large tankage
-No leaks
-Cummins 8.3 liter engine with Allison 3060 Six Speed transmission (C8.3 for 98 and older, ISC for 99 and newer).
-Sufficient Cargo Carrying Capacity....around 4,000 pounds is what you want
-No smokers or pets
-Clean, clean, clean.....if the previous owner(s) did not take care of the interior and exterior, you can be sure they did not take care of the mechanicals.
As you have found out, all of the inventory on the internet looks great but many disappoint when you personally inspect.
There is plenty of inventory out there...I was lucky enough to have a business trip to Houston and spent a few hours at PPL to establish some baselines.
Also consider support from the coach and chassis manufacturer and the viability of the support going forward in this difficult economy.
The hunt is a lot of fun. Enjoy it!
