Possible New Purchase

I am very close to buying my first rv class A motor home.It is just a 5 hour (hopefully )drive to inspect this baby.Weather long term is calling for snow squalls and white outs. You have to actually drive in this **** to believe it.Pardon my French.

It may be closer to a 10 hour drive.

My Canadian brothers and sisters know all about this.

This unit is a (1999) Damen Challenger,50,000 miles $15,000 and appears from the pics to be in pretty good shape.

I know the basics like checking the oil dipstick for a milky substance indicating water in the oil indicating a possible head gasket problem.

Checking the exhaust when cold starting to see if traces of blue smoke are present to indicate cylinder ring degradation.

I also know to check the corners inside the unit for traces of water leaks.

Is there anything else I should be looking for?

I have to admit I am a bit nervous about all of this.

$15,000 for me is a big purchase.

I am recently retired and on a fixed income.
I cannot afford a major screw up in this purchase.

Is there anything I should be on the lookout for?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated

I am very new to this!

thank you

Here is the link to the unit

  • Looks to me like some one put some money in it. The furniture looks like all replacement furniture, not original. Looks like it was re carpeted too.
  • From the pictures and the writeup, it looks like a nice motorhome. Next step will be for you to inspect it to see if you really like it. Unfortunatly, I've looked at several in the last few weeks that looked good when viewing pictures on-line, but we immediately rejected upon walking through the motorhome. Faded upholstery, soiled carpet, and smells can not be detected in pictures.

If you like the looks of it and the floorplan, then a careful inspection and operation check is in order.

Good luck, and I hope it shows as well a it looks.

  • It looks like a nice unit, probably a pretty good price too.
Tires like new? look for a (DOT)date code on them. Ask for any history on it, but otherwise use your drivetrain knowledge and gut feeling. Test drive-how's it feel?
  • What chassis is it built on? That can affect our answers on what to look for.
  • Look at all the belts and hoses, if they look old, figure on replacing all of them. Also look at the air filter, if it real dirty, you can figure that regular maintenance wasn't done.
  • Question..IF you like it and buy it, how are you getting it home?....sounds like you've been around engines a bit so you've got a pretty good handle on things there. That said, and the reason for my question, if the coach is in good shape and passes your initial inspection, would the seller let you spend the night in it? As cold as it is, you could get a pretty good handle on the workings of the fridge, electrical, heater, water heater, stove and all that stuff.....that wouldn't cost you much and if he balks, you might ask yourself why. IMHO, anyone willing to go as far as you are, is an interested buyer and I'll bend over backwards to make sure you're comfortable buying my coach....good luck..keep us posted...Dennis
  • Where is the unit at? I think it would be best for you to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.

  • A 1999 Damen Challenger. I would expect to put another at least $5000 into it. New tires are not cheap. That is usually how it works.
