power awning problem

I've been looking, but haven't been able to find anything near my problem.

We are buying a 2002 Holiday Rambler Imperial. Most everything on this unit works just fine, with the exception of the power awning. Pushing the switch by the entry door will cause the awning to deploy about 3 or 4 feet, and then is just slowly stops. I know absolutely nothing about power awnings, but if that is the only issue with this motor home, at the price we are paying, it is still a steal.

Anyway, the awning is not covered, (it is a consignment sale), and I will be stuck with it.

Seems like the motor(s) work just fine for a short while, and something may be out of adjustment.

Wondering if anyone out there has had similar issues with theirs, and what they did to fix it.

Thanks

  • As two posters have said look for possible spots that cause low voltage. Plug in connections etc. You can also plug a jumper wire directly into the motor from a separate and fully charged battery. If it works then you are reasonably sure the problem is low voltage. It took 5years and finally the factory replacing my entire system which still didn't fix the problem before a tech figured out I had a bad electrical splice between the controller and motor.
  • Well, thanks for all the ideas.

The coach is still at the dealer having some other issues resolved, so I haven't had a chance to check it out. I also don't know which brand it is.

dverstra; If they can resolve a couple issues without additional costs to us, we will be paying $60,000.00. That seems to be a fair price for us. Peg got the interior floor plan and storage she wants, and all the guy stuff is good for me. I could use more horsepower, but then again, I can always use more horsepower. I don't want to get in over our heads, so probably won't pay much more for it, regardless.

wa8yxm; And just how in Hell would you know what my experience is, or is not? Although I have not owned a power awning, we have been doing this for about 15 years now, the last 10 full time. I certainly don't know everything (hence, this thread) but I have managed to keep two different motor homes, a 5er, and a travel trailer on the road, along with a competitive 8 second drag car. right now, I am looking to cut it down to just this Holiday Rambler, and a toad, and let someone else to the putzing for a change.

  • Well, as it turns out, it is a Carefree of Colorado unit. We just picked up the coach after a long, long process and lots of fun games. Anyway, haven't had time to really mess with it, but did come upon a tech bulletin in all the paper work. Kind of interesting. It says "if the awning will not fully extend, the rafters may need adjusting." They suggest the following "push extend button until awning is fully extended, then adjust rafters". They fail to mention how you get the awning to fully extend if the awning won't fully extend, but then again, I tend to over think these things.

  • Our tech was able to fit a new motor (different style than shown) to replace this bent one. Probably the same vintage as yours, ours rig is also a 2002. The new one fits inside the roller. The arms did not have to be removed though the roller unit did. I could post an "after" photo if you need it.

We had been told by a shop in Yuma that it couldn't be done.
