power Gear jacks

I have a 2000 National Sea View on a Ford chassis, I went out to un winterize it yesterday (has been sitting a year) The leveling jacks will not retract. The green power light comes on, but the red jacks down light does not. All fuzzes are good.Im taking it in for service anyway, how do I manually retract the jacks?

  • need the model number of the jacks

my 1997 Bounder has power gear jacks, and they are spring retract, one valve releases pressure and retracts all jacks

take a look at the jacks, springs ? or no springs ?

no springs need the pump running for power retract

start the engine, start the generator, get some power to the batteries

been sitting for a year ? shore power ? yes/no

no shore, no solar = dead batteries
  • We had a coach next to us that had the same thing. There was a loose wire connection under the dash. They had Power Gear also.
  • Power Gear jacks are power up and down.
Remove the control panel/box you should find the emergency retract jumper cable zip tied to the wires going to the panel. install (only goes one way) when jacks are full up, cut power and remove. (May very well work after that)
If no jumper....try removing plugs and reinstalling. I have seen that reset the system.

Let use know how it goes....Good Luck

YOu need a good 12 volts to open the valves.

Visually inspect the jacks, Are they UP or down, if they are FULLY retracted (no silver) than your problem is lack of jack fluid (likly Dextron III ATF) you may need to top off the tank.. Do this ONLY when the jacks are fully up.
  • What I'd do is find the hydraulic manifold and first check all the wiring is in good condition, no broken wires, no corrosion, etc. Wiggle things, unplug and replug connections. And then, my favorite repair method...whack the solenoids with a rubber mallet. It's satisfying and often works to restore sticky valves and coils. The other thing you should do is wipe down the jack shafts with whatever the manufacturer suggested for your model...usually ATF for that age of system. After that, maybe spray them with a lube. The 'LAST' method is cracking the hydraulic tubing for ATF fluid on the 'lower solenoid' as it's going to spray everywhere as it's under pressure.

Of course, it helps to measure that you have a nice solid 12 volts on the big wires going to the electrical items on the manifold.

My Power Gear system was a '94 so some things might not apply, but perhaps my blog article on it would help: Power Gear Leveling System
