Power loss, Need help finding cat dealer in Denver

Well here I am just west of Denver Co. in a walmart parking lot. I noticed about 10 miles down the road a significant loss of power . I made it to this walmart about 15 miles west of Denver. I changed my fuel filter and restarted the engine and it ran fine. I will not know if I fixed the problem until I get back on the road. I do not want to take a chance and think tomorrow morning I am going back into Denver to a cat shop and get this thing checked out before continuing westward. I have the rocky mountain climb between me and Utah and I sure don't want to get stuck up in the mountains somewhere.

The question is does anyone recommend a shop that can check out the cat c7 engine. I have lost a couple of injectors in the past and I am afraid this may be the problem. What about it? Any suggestions on where to go get this thing looked at? I can do a google search but I would rather hear from someone here on rv.net that has had some experience with a local shop here in Denver rather than fliping a coin and going wherever.

Thanks

Ken

  • Update om my trouble. I have a bad turbo. It is being replaced now . I should have the motorhome back by Friday. I sure wish it had been a loose boot instead. Ha Ha. Anyway At least I stopped when I should have. I am being told that the wastegate failed and stuck in the open position and I was getting no boost. I am wondering now how long this has been broken. I am almost always driving at lower altitude under 1000 feet back home in tennessee and down to florida and this is the first time I have been at this high of an altitude in Denver. 5000 or so.

  • did you notice any black smoke when this happened? How long ago have you changed your air filter?

I recently had a loss of power that changing the filters did not fix. Replacing the lift pump did not fix it. Put a short piece of clear tubing before the second filter and there was small air bubbles in the fuel. Taking the tight fuel line at the tank off and back on solved the problem.
I'd take it out and climb some hills at full power and see how it goes.
  • I called transwest trucking and it would be 3 or more weeks before they could look at it. Rush trucking would be a week about 10-12 days. I picked the wrong time of the year to break down in Denver. Thanks for the help.

  • Three years ago we had an F 650 with a CAT C7 that derated and died west of Denver. The company below took it in and diagnosed the problem and fixed it. Very knowledgeable staff putting the truck through the required tests, finding the problem no one else could find diagnostically. Highly recommend!Hope this helps. Let us know how you made out or if you did fix the problem by changing the filters. Bill

  • I can't recommend a place in Denver, but if you have to choose one without a good recommendation, hop in your toad and drive to the Freightliner and Peterbuilt shops to get a feel for them. I'd choose the one that has the cleanest shop and has the most vehicles that are waiting to be worked on - and see how many DPs are being serviced. Choosing a shop with a lot of rigs waiting to be worked on usually means people like their work, but you might have to wait a few days to get in.

  • Go to the Cat website. It will give you all the location and what services they provide.
