PowerTech Generators?

I was just looking at an ad for a used diesel motorhome and see it had a Power Tech Generator 8000 watt. I've never heard of this brand. How are they? How does it comapre to say a 7500 watt Onan? Are they as quiet as the Onan? Any pros or cons. The one I was reading about is in an 05 Dutchstar. Thanks

  • We have an 8K Powertech in our Foretravel without the quiet box,it is no louder than the Onan, one thing I like about my Powetech is there is no upend down in RPM when you turn on something in the coach, no belt to replace for the generator end.

  • Powertech APU's were originally designed and are used in the Marine market. Yes, they are noisier than an Onan, but I believe you can option a "Quiet" package for them to deaden the sound. At least that is what Newmar offered over 10 years ago on Newmar's that offered Powertech APU's. You also might be able to get the quiet kit for your existing Powertech. I would call them and ask. Having a Powertech is NOT a deal killer. They are just as good as a Onan or Kohler. Doug
  • I also have a Power Tech generator and find the noise to be about the same as most other MOHO gensets that I have heard, but then again that is a limited sample. The enclosure is well insulated, could it be different RV manufacturers specify different insulation levels? I haven't used it much, but it has been trouble free and access is good for oil, filter and coolant changes.

  • We have a 17 KW Powertech in our Prevost. It's been very reliable and is quieter then the Onans we've had in past MH's, but that could be just the sound insulation. It's also mounted on airbags. You really have to listen for it.
  • We have an 8 kW power tech generator. Many Prevosts use power tech. That said I do think it is noisy. However it has always worked well. If I had a choice, I would pick Onan because they seem to be more quiet and there seems to be more service centers for them.
  • We have a 8 Kw PT in our 02 DSDP and it has been very reliable. I consider it quieter than most other units. It runs at a constant RPM no matter the load. Was selected based on the Newmar tech's suggestion over an Onan when we ordered it new. I have head that some PT can be noisy but ours is well muffler-ed and runs with very little vibration which I suspect has to do with the constant RPM

Newmar uses a slide out tray in front so that any unit is easy to access.

  • I have a 10K Power Tech in my Vogue, it the original from 1996. I've owned the MH for close to 12 years and we do lots of Hot weather driving where the Gen is running all day. Knock on wood, the Gen set has never been a problem.....that's not to say its the quietest out there but were talking diesel Gen sets. It just wouldn't be a deal breaker for me...IMHO
  • Ive got an 8K Powertech in my coach and I cant believe people say they are nosier than Onans..?? Mine is right under the soaf and I sleep there many times with the genset running.

They dont have the so called Name that Onan does because they build many gensets for military use a compared to commercial / civilian useage.

Ive had mine for 13 years now and wouldnt trade it for an 8K "Quiet" Onan...no way
  • I walked away from a 2003 Kountry Star (new) in 2003 because it had a Powertech genny because I didn't like the noise. I have had a number of medium size generators in the 8K to 12K range. The only non Onan I would consider would be a Northern Lights. Unfortunately, they don't put them in RVs but had one in a commercial fishing boat and it ran 24/7 for months on end. Never did anything to it but routine maintenance! Have had 4 Onans and never regretted any of them, as long as you maintain them. Had a 12.5KW Onan diesel on a boat and it had over 11,000 hours on it when I sold the boat...all we ever did was change the oil & filters when scheduled. This particular genny had very hard everyday use and otherwise ignored it. Remember, if you don't use a genny, any genny, none of them will last as long as they should.
  • Have heard from my Welder repair guy in VA that they get more of them than Onan and they are noisier and you can always upgrade to an Onan. They are made in US, FL I believe but just cheaper. Heard of a 7.5 Onan with 12000 hrs on it.
