Get on a ladder and manually unwind it. That's the only way.

Undo the latch. With one person at each awning end pull outward on the outer side struts as high up as possible. It should begin to unroll.

It may be easier to tie a rope high on each arm to pull it out. Less strain on the helpers...

Not a big issue, we all have done that one time or other. It best to have your DR hold the metal rod when you start to roll it in.

Ladder and unroll it by hand till you grab the strap.. In my case I have an electric awning (how you do it when the motor fails) and alasx, I don't sit out under it like my wife did so it's ZIP-Tied closed.

Yeah and have you noticed with the instructions to apply an external 12vdc source if it fails. Not gonna help much, if the motor is bad, eh?
Now, you'd think there'd be a quick disconnect for one to operate it manually and especially with the motors being so high up. Then again, this kind of rocket science, would probably be asking too much. At least with mine, they are and have a CAREFREE OF COLORADO.

They sure do snap closed fast. Been there too. I just pulled mine manually. Just flip the lock so when you pull it out it latches. I then pulled out some on one side and then the other until it was out far enough to find the strap.
