I'd say two things hamper the upfitting of PMs. The low ground clearance, and the fact that the wheels intrude twice as high into the van as they do on Transits and Sprinters.
I mentioned this on the "B" forums, but what would solve this is if FCA (Fiat-Chrysler Autos) would sell the high-roof ProMaster in the US. This would allow upfitters to have a false floor and place tanks there. Add insulation and a furnace that uses space around the tanks as a plenum airspace, and that would address use below freezing temperatures.
As for the review, and how places engineer around the PM's shortcomings, I really think the true platform of choice next to the Sprinter will be the Ford Transit. It will have a high roof, 22 foot version available, as well as many, many options. The EB V6 puts out a similar power curve as a diesel, and one can find Ford service places in a lot of places.
