Propane and tunnels

So, I used to have a job where occasionally I had to transport cylinders of compressed gas. There was a rule that you couldn't take them through tunnels. So now I'm wondering. Is there a rule about taking a vehicle with a propane cylinder through a tunnel? Is it legal? Do I have to check with each state that I am traveling through? What is the story?
  • Where is the information on the Oregon and Washington tunnels that don't allow propane?

Most do not exclude propane, but require it to be turned off. I continue to be amazed at what people read into things. The one that I know of the excepts propane it not one I would think about taking a Class A Motorhome through
  • Tunnels in Boston, all three of them, NO propane onboard! Take
    the surface route bypasses.
