Question on getting DEF

For all you diesel drivers, where do you fill your DEF tank? Do most of the diesel lanes have DEF too? Is it a pump like fuel or some other device?

As you might have guessed, I haven't refueled my new rig yet.

Thanks for all the great input.

  • I try to use the DEF pump at truck stops, much cheaper. I drive in with the big rigs because it is not at the other diesel pumps.

  • DEF is also sold at heavy duty truck dealerships and farm equipment dealerships in convenient square jugs at good prices.

Nuttin like seeing the dollar signs fly pumping with a pair of high flow diesel hoses!

Those large diameter nozzles on the truck lanes run fast enough I haven't felt the need to run 2 at once but the max I have ever put in is 70 gal. That is still enough to give you a twinge in the wallet.

  • I noticed that some new models are having the DEF tank moved to the drivers side so that it can be filled at the truck pumps. Prevost just changed their filler to the driver's side on the 2013 models. I see that the 2014 Newmar (King Air) DEF tank is still on the passenger side.

Since it doesn't need filling often, I'm sure it's not a big deal but I would rather have it on the drivers side and fill up when I buy diesel. That's just one less item to carry along in the storage bay.

  • I'm only familiar with Pilot/Flying J. DEF Is available at all their truck lines. The DEF pump is on the same side as main pump. Since my DEF tank is located on the passenger side, it's just not easy to fill at the truck lanes.

And since the DEF tank requires filling so infrequently, even though it is more expensive, I'll either buy it by the box inside the truck stop or just pick some up at Wally World.
  • I buy the 2-1/2 gallon container at Auto Zone for about $14.50. It comes with its own filler nozzle and is very easy to put in the tank. It was not hard to handle at all, and I didn't spill a drop.
