Quick reply please.

O.K. DP owners. We are in Lake City Co. travelled down 149 from Gunnison, 33ft DP, Cummins 300hp.
DH does not want to go over Slumguillion Pass in our MH, wants to go back to Hwy 50. to get back to Louisiana. We have done many mountain passes in this MH and I am very comfortable driving them.
What should we do?
Thanks for your input.
Sherry
  • Thank you olddave, that is exactly what I want,, experienced input.
    Some of you people......
We will return to Gunnison on 149 north them head home.
We will definitely drive the pass in our 4x4 before heading home.
Thank those of you with helpful answers.

  • The north side is the steepest side. I would rather go from north to south, as you would be doing, than south to north. Since you have done mountain passes before, you should have not problem with this one. Just take it slow and easy going up. Going down the south side is not nearly as steep and no problem at all. And a very pretty drive to Creede (a must stop) and on down to South Fork.
  • They want input from those that have been on this pass before, which seems
like a good idea to me .
It is often more scary for the pass than the driver , you have no control .
I do the driving of our DP MOHO and have avoided roads that the DW thought
    was scary .
I used to see any pass or road as a challenge to be conquered , not so much
    anymore .
Challenging to me might be torture to her
Now days she might even be more adventurous than me, she is a little younger .
We have been over Slumguillion Pass and it can be challenging and is not to be
    taken lightly
Why not park the coach and drive it in the car , it's beautiful up there .
  • What are you looking for here? If my wife and I disagree about something, it won't help her case if she comes up with a bunch of people who agree with her.

Well Sherry. Normally I say "If the wife ain't happy nobody's happy.

But truthfully that's sexist.. It works both ways.. Make DH happy.
  • According to the Mountain Directory West that pass southbound entails a climb of about 7.5 miles of 9% grade and then the descent involves 2 miles of 6% then anther 3 miles of 7-8%. You must then head up and down Spring Creek Pass which is not as bad with a 2 mile climb of 6% followed by several short descents of 6-7% in a rolling hills fashion.

I have driven our Phaeton all over the Rockies but would hesitate on this one myself, especially since the ride up to 50 is only an hour away. The ride up Slumgullion is long and steep and will require your coolant system to be in top notch condition. If your coach is in very good shape the ride down Slumgullion should be manageable in a very low gear and the occasional application of brakes.
