My mother and I went to Yugoslavia in 1968 but first bought a squareback VW station
wagon, the one with the fold down seats in the back. We got two foam pads that spanned from side to side and could be rolled up, but we eventually left it in place. Our luggage was moved to the front seats when we slept. We shopped in the open air markets for food or ate at the campground cafeteria which was absolutely the best food. We would buy fresh stuff to eat during the day, tinned stuff. We camped for 6 weeks as we drove all over and occasionally we would stay in a sobe a B&B type room in a private home.
I have now picked up two little used AC on craigslist for @$100 each, one for a friends Shasta and one for my DH teardrop. They arent tiny, they arent light weight, but just toss the hose out the window and they cool very well. It is entirely doable if you know how to downsize what you need.
