The arithmetic is if you drive 5000 miles a year, the savings between 8 and 12(which you will never get) is $800. Big deal.
You say you can work on it but on the side of the road when it quits, what do you do?
I'm not saying picking sides but based on my experience diesel will cost you more in the long run, just differently than gas.
An example. I fought brake issues with my gas coaches. DP brakes will last 100K miles or more.
Turbo, check engine lights on a DP ARE PRICEY.
