My buddy claimed the same gallons of gas (about 15?) as I used in #2 fuel from one pit stop to the next. I led, we drove about 65, and I got 10.5 mpg with a 7.3L pulling a travel trailer. He apparently got the same in his mini-home (V-10). But his consumption is subject to how full he filled I suppose. My confounded tank spits back terribly and I often slow way down at the end which encourages a near 100% fill.
The best the stock 7.3L has ever done towing, is a little over 12 mpg, 10.5 to 11 much more likely. I've pondered earlier non-turbo higher compression heads but have no current idea how well something like that may actually work. Likely get high exhaust temps under load, I assume. Methanol injection might allow this mod, however.
Some vehicles do get substancially better fuel economy such as our '07 Prius. But everything about the car is designed specifically for this and it outperforms everything (even most road bikes), including surpassing Toyota's own Hybrid Camry which uses nearly identical hardware. Just engine mods alone seem unlikely to produce substancially greater fuel economy.
Guess I need a good book on the why and how of diesel efficiency for one thing.
Perhaps what motorhomes really need is chopped roofs and tapered tails.
