Actually, the dealership does not "have" to make a profit. I have a close friend who owns a dealership and he is the one that gave me advice on some of the tricks. Dealers have other incentives to sell cars and sometimes getting the number of sales up is more important to them than making a profit on every single car sold. Sure they want to make a profit, but there are times they just need to move the vehicles too and will take a loss. Sort of like at Macy's when you get down to the end of the clearance rack and they take another 50% off the already discounted price, there is a point where they are selling the items below their cost just to get them out of the store.
