I just went through this pricing a new unit from Safford RV in Va. They gave me a great deal, then proceeded to add $500 "doc" fee and $1500 PDI. I told my regular dealer this and he laughed and said it's typical of some dealerships. I mean PDI should be done before it even hits the lot. The funny thing was they would not come off the PDI and went so far as saying they wouldn't do the deal without it. This was after I told them I could get the same unit cheaper with no PDI. Whatever. I ended up going with another dealer who had no such fees. Crazy.
the other dealer had those same fees but they were likely built into the overhead. ain't nothing free.
I don't see how. To start their price was $2k less than Safford even before PDI. Safford quoted me a price out the door. When I told them I could get the deal cheaper they matched it, then added the $2k back in for PDI and doc fees. So the price came out the same as the original out the door price. Shell game. The other dealer out the door was much less. I am sure the new dealer still makes a profit. But to stand firm on $2k over the competition and tell me it's PDI and Doc fees, seems dumb. Especially when they know I can get the same unit $2k less 2 hours away. Oh well, they lost my business. They'll get another sucker to pay more, not me.
overhead costs will vary from business to business and profit margins will vary from business to business. the incentives a dealer gets from the mfg will also vary. that's why, for us anyway, all we care about is the final price. the dealer can divvy that up anyway his lil ole pea pickin heart desires.
