I agree with your approach. Diesels are long lived engines and made to pull. With older rigs maintenance matters a lot. I would not buy a high mileage rig or one someone has lived in. On the other hand, some just sit around and don't get used which can be just as bad. Find the best quality rig you can that has not been abused and maintained. You can tell a lot by talking with the owner.
